Anyway, Deans wanted me to random the Maples and the Team USA dual among the non-hitting slot breakers to spread things around a bit. First cards go out tomorrow, the last wave on Saturday.

Group Break Hits: 1, 2, Oh My God

We had 5 boxes, so guaranteed hits. We got 8 so we came out way ahead on the odds. Of the 8 the Ramirez is /25, the Strasburg is /50 (right?), one of the Macfarlands is /500, the Maples is /199, and the Delmonico/Wolters is /500. The Braun orange is also /25. Slot results: Get Ready

OK, I won't ruin the surprise for you, but skip down and pay close attention to slot #18 (especially in round d), owned by Dean who took the Giants. I'm sure several of you have been thinking "What's will CCC on this one?" Well, now you know. I'll be getting the vids up tonight (finally) but in the meantime here we go.

2010 topps t206: The Review

After getting beat last night tonight the Rays are PUMMELING the Sox, so all is right with the world. (This will post in the morning---I'll go out on a limb and call the win). I'll get back to regular programming beginning tomorrow but in the meantime, here are my unsolicited thoughts on the 2010 Topps t206 break.

Here's the video recap, and here are the hits.

Design: I love the design. I actually like it better than last year's 206 or even Ginter. The hats/no hats thing is a bit weird but whatever. The original 206 is pretty eccentric so I'll deal. I also like the no # variations with a different pic on the front. My one issue with that is those cards seem to be so much BETTER than the regular cards, why not do the whole set like that? It's a legit question.

Minis: I like the minis, I like the variations. It's a personal thing, but I feel like this year's design adds enough to the feel of the original set so as to be unique and not just a rip-off.

Hits: Now we're getting into the soup of things. Topps has obviously added some high-value hits to the product (the Mantle books, etc.) at the cost of producing an even checklist with value distributed up and down. I understand the appeal of the massive hits to a lot of collectors, but it's at the cost of people who'd just rather rip a great box of cards. Our two plates made the break, but we're still at least a hit short. I'm sure the folks who landed hits are stoked (and rightfully so) but in a vacuum I feel like the hits were pretty weak. That said, I'm happy with the Rays I got (including the CC mini!).

Overall: As a group break product this was fun even though we didn't score the mega hit. However, if I'd thrown down on this as an individual looking to land something mega-awesome I'd be hurt. I recognize that a lot of it comes down to disposable income, but at $82 a box you need at least one solid hit to anchor a box. No disrespect to the guys we pulled (I live in Twins territory and I'd even say I'm a Kubel fan), but $5 autos just won't do it. I'd much rather have a cheaper product with those kinds of autos or, at the same price, a product without the whale hits and better distribution of value.

Puttin' on the hits: The Ghost of Jason Kubel Break

Video and the review will be up tomorrow, but in the meantime here are the hits.

As with the "Dodgers Box" Icons Break, this one will forever live in infamy as the "Ghost of Jason Kubel" Break.

The Relics:

Do the printing plates count as relics? If not then we got shorted 2 hits! Again, props to Sooz for advice in handling Topps customer service. Any more input is appreciated.

The Cycle Backs:

A month ago those Strasburgs were worth $15K. Now? Who knows?

And finally the autos:

That's right: not one, but TWO Kubel autos. The odds are astronomical. Plus, that makes THREE Koob hits in the last two breaks. Amazing. 

Boxes are Broken! Scans soon, video and such later; Advice needed

not to set the bar low here, but we are short at least one hit (from the last box). Also, I'm guessing printing plates count in the 2 guaranteed relics/autos per box, correct?

Any advice on how to go about getting in touch with Topps about how to get the missing hit(s) would be awesome. I've seen different folks have been successful working this out, so I'm hoping it goes well!

I've been chasing this one card for a while but a few weeks ago I hit "bid" with 2 seconds to go and landed it for a decent enough price. It's not a CC but a great vintage card. Before I roll it out I want to know: what cards are your whales? Not necessarily anything REALLY expensive like the Wagner or a 52 Mantle, but the cards you track on ebay and salivate over only to get outbid? 

I FINALLY landed one of mine and let me tell you, it feels pretty #@$* good.
