Enough with the Manny hating....

this is ridiculous.

Now, I generally like Jeff Passan, and I'm not necessarily a Manny fan, but c'mon. Do I think he behavior was bad/unprofessional? Sure. Are there players out there who would take Manny to the woodshed over this? You bet. But let's not forget: Kevin Mitchell was half way to SD when he was told he'd be hitting for Aguilera in the '86 WS. That's generally seen as charming and part of the "character" of the '86 Mets.

What I really take umbrage with is the fact that Passan brings up Manny's suspension. Without a hint of irony. At the same moment that another PROVEN ROIDER is tearing it up over in the ALCS. So what, exactly, are we to make of Manny's steroid use, given that he's largely been absent against the Phillies? Given the lack of outrage over A-Rod, steroids, and on-field performance, I can only assume Passan feels it's unprofessional that a) Manny got caught and b) he didn't do it in sufficient amounts to be a postseason god.

  1. I don't like either, but I would take Manny over A-Roid any day... I think its funny that neither of those two could crack the starting line-up on the Rays, either. I know their teams aren't trying to move them, especially not to the Rays, but I'm just saying...Thanks again for the trade my friend, I really appreciate the cards and posted them last night... Go West Coast Teams!!!

  2. Well, I dunno, there is something pretty over-the-top obnoxious about going to take a shower before the game is over.

Do we assume that both Aroid and Manning Up are no longer using the juice?

  3. I'm not a Manny fan, but could someone please explain to me what the big deal was with him hitting the shower after he got pulled from the game? Pitchers seem to do it all the time, and no one cares.

  4. There are countless examples of players disappearing during games and people griping about it afterward. It's not right, but Manny certainly isn't the first ballplayer to do it.

What about Kevin Mitchell, during Game 6 of the 1986 World Series? With two outs in the 9th inning, he left for the clubhouse to make plane reservations to go home. Reports say he changed out of his uniform although Mitchell years later disputed that.

What about Rickey Henderson and Bobby Bonilla playing cards in the clubhouse during the 1999 NLCS while their team was trying to win a playoff game?

I'm sure there are other examples. It doesn't make it right, but people need to stop acting like Ramirez is the only guy who does this.

  5. @ Troll: Dude, the cards you sent were awesome! I'm so slow with Daddy D in town I haven't responded. Man, Thanks!

@DC: That's part of it. I mean, I wouldn't assume that are/aren't juicing, but the effects of steroids last for a long while after one has stopped juicing. Just because someone is clean now doesn't mean they aren't still reaping the benefits.

@Paul: Part of my point. I feel like Passan's piece (and many others as well) are justing piling on b/c the Dodgers are down. They win last night it's no big deal. Just like when the Sox were winning WS no one cared and Manny was cute; they stopping winning he's a jerk.

@Night Owl: I completely agree. But like I said above, people are using this as an excuse to pile on, which I think is phony and just not cool. Again, if the Dodgers were up this would be cute "Manny being Manny."

And lastly, just to say it again, if one wants to rip up Manny for the PEDs, than where are the articles on how two key members of the Yankees (Petitte, A-Rod) are ADMITTED juicers, and how the fact that NEITHER of them even served a suspension changes how we feel about the Yankees' season, much less their post-season. Personally, it leaves a bad, bad tasted in my mouth that NO ONE is talking about that. Again: winning=absolution, which signifies that the ends DO justify the means. Losing means you are a selfish jerk who cheated (Manny).
